NaNoWriMo Update – Day 4

Yesterday, I Skyped with my daughter, Katrina, who is also an aspiring writer. (And she’s such a good writer!) When she was a teenager, she and I used to do word sprints together. We would go to a cafe, order chai tea lattes, set a timer for 15 minutes and write as much as we could, trying to beat each other out for the highest word count.

Since I am doing NaNoWriMo, she asked me if I wanted to do some word sprints with her. I jumped at the chance! We both needed a little bit (okay, I needed a lot!) of motivation to get writing.

After chatting for a couple of hours, because that is what we do, we finally got down to our word sprints. Katrina got comfy on her couch, while I got comfy at my desk’ her in New Jersey, me in Massachusetts. We both had our headphones on with our own music playing (shout out for Spotify!), I set the timer on my phone and off we went. We both type really fast and Katrina said that with the both of us typing it sounded like a stampede. ; )

For our first word sprint I wrote 809 words! I was very pleased with that. We decided to do a second one and I got 755 words for a total of 1564 words in just 30 minutes. I was so excited to have reached that many words so quickly and, since it has been so long since I did a word sprint, I was actually very surprised.

I pretty much floated around the house for a few hours that basking in the writing high I felt. I got brave and decided to do a word sprint by myself and I wrote another 619 words. Not bad since I got interrupted twice and had to stop the timer each time and then get back into it again. Me thinks I shall have to put a sign up on my bedroom/office door – “Doing word sprints. Interrupt at your own peril!”

Total time: 45 minutes

Total word count: 2,183 words.

Those word sprints work like a charm for me. I highly recommend you give it a try! 🙂

Happy NaNoWriMo 2013!

Are you ready for the wild ride we are about to take to reach 50,000 words in just one month? I know I am! I am super excited about this year’s NaNoWriMo because this is the year that I’m going to WIN!

I’ve tried NaNoWriMo many times in the past, but never got to the finish line. Since I have declared 2013 as my year to GO FOR IT, I won’t let anything stop me from achieving this long-time goal!

I know that I am meant to be a novelist. I have known that since I was 18 years old and pregnant with my first child. I’m 44 now so it has been 25 years (!) since this writing dream of mine first took hold of me. I’ve tried so many times to ignore this dream (It’s just too hard! I can never get through the middle! It’s just too hard! Who am I to think I can be a novelist! It’s just too haaaarrrrd!!!)

I’m sure you caught my drift there. The main thing that had been holding me back for so long was thinking writing is too hard. I believed all the talk about writing being like pulling teeth, or worse, opening a vein and bleeding onto the page (what a ghastly image!).

But then I experimented and created some writing tricks and playful (and FUN) activities that make writing a JOY and so much FUN! I will be using these tricks and playful activities to write my NaNo novel this month and I will also be chronicling my journey here with you.

When I have reached my 50,000 words at the end of this month, my heart’s desire is to teach you all that I have learned and created so that you too will know that writing is FUN and JOYFUL. It does not have to be the chore-like drudgery that so many other writers have made it out to be.

I hope you’ll join me as I chronicle this NaNo writing journey in my blog this month. I plan on writing about my experience of each day’s writing along with my daily and total word counts. I will also be sharing a tip or two to help you along your own journey of writing bliss.

Stay tuned . . .
